Mike retired from Norfolk Southern in December of 2009 and is now volunteering full time with Builders of Hope. Though he did not earn his living working in construction, he has been involved in construction most of his life, most notably building his own home in 1979. He has served as a elder at his home church, River Valley Church in Mishawaka.

Mike and his wife, Carolyn, have been married since 1971 and have three children and six grand-children. They have been to Honduras twice and led numerous teams to the Gulf Coast area to work in the months and years following hurricane Katrina. They also led rebuilding teams to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Dickson, Tennessee to rebuild after floods in those areas.
